First, find an experienced colorist with a lot of experience

First, find an experienced colorist with a lot of experience. You can do this by asking your friends and family for recommendations, looking at their website, and looking at the colorist’s Instagram account. If you’re not satisfied with what they have to say, ask them more questions about their training—how many years they have been doing hair coloring? What school did they attend? Have they worked under any mentors who are known for their work in this industry?

If you don’t feel like your stylist is telling the truth or if he/she seems hesitant to answer these questions, then it might be best to look somewhere else for help!

Get the right products

There are two primary types of products you can use to achieve your goals:

  • Permanent hair color. It’s a little more expensive than semi-permanent dye, but this option is best for people who want to keep their new blonde look. Just be sure to read the directions carefully and follow them exactly, because using too much of this product can cause damage or discoloration. If you have dark hair (black or brown) and want platinum blonde highlights, it may also be worth considering going with a demi-permanent dye instead.
  • Demi-permanent hair color—also known as semi-permanent dye—is an excellent option if you’re looking for longer lasting results without damaging your hair like permanent dyes do. In addition to lightening your natural shade, this type of product also works well at adding dimension by providing highlights or lowlights that blend seamlessly into your existing coloring

Make sure you’re prepared for the upkeep.

As with any color, blonde highlights require weekly maintenance. You will need to touch up your roots at home and visit the salon every month or so to get a fresh lightening pass. This ensures that your beautiful blonde doesn’t fade out into brassy yellow.

If you’re willing to put in this extra work, there’s no reason why you can’t achieve the perfect platinum look!

You will have to touch-up your roots.

You will have to touch-up your roots, and you will likely need to do this often. The lifespan of a dyed blonde hair color can be anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 months depending on how often you wash it, how much product you use in the shower, etc. If you don’t want to pay for professional touch-ups every 2 weeks (which is what I did), there are two options:

  • You can buy an at home root touch up kit and do it yourself! These usually come with a bottle of developer and/or toner (depending on whether or not you want highlights) and some brushes/brushes shaped like paintbrushes that allow for easy application. A word of caution though: This method only works if done correctly because leaving the dye on too long will cause damage instead of highlighting – so follow instructions carefully! It’s also important that when doing this method outside make sure ventilation is good as well as keeping an eye out for rain clouds 🙂
  • Alternatively if these solutions seem too labor intensive there’s always having someone else do it! Hair salons offer this service too but keep in mind prices vary depending on where they’re located so call around before committing yourself completely–you may even find someone who does better work than others at cheaper prices!

If you really want blonde hair, you have to be prepared to do your part.

If you’re a brunette and you want to go blonde, be prepared for the fact that it’s not going to happen overnight. You might have to do touch-ups as often as every two weeks if your hair grows quickly and/or is thick. If your hair grows slowly and is thin, it could take up to three months before you see any significant difference in coloration.

It’s important not to get frustrated or discouraged when this happens! The best way of doing this is by buying yourself some time—you can do so by booking appointments at salons with reasonable business hours (many salons close early on weekdays). If possible, try scheduling appointments at different times of day—this way you won’t have an entire afternoon blocked out just for touching up your highlights.
