About ToDye

Our Mission

ToDye was founded with a simple yet powerful mission: to help dyers everywhere make smarter decisions, through approachable guidance and free tools that make building a dye recipe, converting yarn counts, weighing a fabric’s GSM, and mixing custom colors clearer, more rewarding, and more practical.

We believe that everyone who dyes or dreams of dyeing, from first-time hobbyists to seasoned studio professionals, deserves access to accurate tools, comprehensive resources, and trustworthy guidance. Our platform bridges the gap between confusing chemistry and confident, well-informed decisions about dye selection and recipes, mordants and auxiliaries, liquor ratios and depth of shade, natural and synthetic dyes, color matching, and dyeing sustainably.

Through our free collection of tools, we help dyers make informed decisions about dye recipes, batch costs, eco-impact, yarn count conversions, fabric weight, and mixing colors by parts. Every tool is designed with real-world applicability in mind, tested against the day-to-day realities of prepping, mordanting, and dyeing fiber, and continuously improved based on user feedback. To go deeper, explore our Dyes & Textiles museum, with galleries on ancient natural dyes and modern synthetic dyes, natural and synthetic fibers, mordants and auxiliaries, and the techniques behind every great color.

Our Story

ToDye emerged from a need we experienced firsthand. While trying to sort through conflicting advice and scattered references, we noticed a common challenge: the lack of accessible, accurate tools for the everyday decisions that come with mixing a dye bath, running the numbers on a batch’s cost, and getting an even, lasting color in every batch.

Smart dyeing relies heavily on curiosity and a little know-how, which are invaluable. However, a confident dyer also benefits from clear answers about how a dye recipe breaks down, how much salt and soda ash a bath needs, what a fabric weighs in GSM, how a yarn count converts, what color a mix will yield, and how much a batch will cost. We saw an opportunity to combine well-researched dyeing knowledge with modern tools to help people make confident decisions about every batch.

Our team began developing tools that we wished existed when we dyed our first batches. Each calculator and guide was created to solve real problems encountered when costing a dye job, scaling a recipe, or matching a custom shade. We tested every tool against real-world numbers, refined the logic based on feedback, and ensured that the results reflected current, widely accepted dyeing practice.

Today, ToDye serves active users worldwide, from first-time hobbyists to lifelong fiber-art enthusiasts. Our tools have helped people build recipes, cost out batches, convert yarn counts, weigh fabric, estimate eco-impact, and mix colors, and make more deliberate, confident dyeing decisions.

Our Core Values

Our Expertise

ToDye’s tools and guides are developed and maintained by a team with extensive dyeing and textile experience across multiple areas:

Our team includes experienced dyers, fiber artists, writers, and reviewers who bring years of combined experience to tool development. We regularly consult industry references and trusted experts to ensure our content reflects current best practices. Our content is general informational and educational content; dyeing involves chemicals and heat — follow product safety data sheets, wear protective equipment, ensure ventilation, and ALWAYS test on a sample swatch before a full batch. Not a substitute for manufacturer instructions.

Looking Forward

The future of dyeing lies in the intelligent combination of curiosity and proven know-how with modern tools and clear knowledge. At ToDye, we’re committed to staying at the forefront of this evolution.

Our development roadmap includes expanded tools for recipe building, cost estimating, color matching, and eco-impact comparison. We’re also working on multilingual support to serve the global community of dyers better, and developing specialized guidance for different fibers, dye classes, and ways of working with them more deliberately.

Most importantly, we remain committed to keeping our tools free and accessible. As we grow, we’ll continue to prioritize user needs, ensuring that everyone has access to practical dyeing tools regardless of their budget.
