20 Tips To Give Your Hair a Cool Gray Look For Halloween
1. Toner
- Toner
If you want to dye your hair gray, but don’t want to commit to the full-on gray look, a toner can help. To achieve this effect, simply apply a cool ash blonde toner over clean dry hair (try L’Oréal Paris Vive Professional Silver Vibration). Be sure to condition the ends of your strands after applying the color so that they don’t get dried out by too much product build-up! If you are looking for something slightly darker than ash blonde but still have cool undertones (which helps give off that “cool” vibe), try using a dark red henna as your base instead.
2. Henna
Henna is a plant-based dye that is safe for hair. It’s also a great conditioner for hair, which makes it an ideal choice for Halloween if you want to get the gray look.
Henna works best on dark hair and can sometimes be difficult to use on light hair. Henna takes multiple treatments to work and will leave your skin stained if you don’t wear gloves while applying it!

3. Chamomile Tea
To lighten your hair with chamomile tea, you’ll need to brew the tea and let it cool. Then, apply the tea on your hair and leave it on for 30 minutes before washing off.
You can also use chamomile flowers in place of the tea if you can’t find any loose leaf tea at your local store. Simply steep two tablespoons of dried flowers (or one tablespoon of fresh) in boiling water for 10 minutes and strain out the plant matter before applying it to your hair as directed above.
4. Indigo
Indigo is a natural blue dye derived from the indigo plant. The same plant that makes jeans blue actually does the same thing to your hair when you use it for its natural dyeing properties — and it lasts longer, too. Indigo can be used on its own or as an alternate method for darkening hair that has been dyed with henna.
Henna is usually applied to lightened or white hair — so if you’ve got darker or bleached locks and want to go gray, this might be the best route for you.
5. White Hair Spray Paint
If you’re looking for a temporary color solution, white hair spray paint is the perfect choice. You can use it to create streaks or highlights, an ombre look, dip dye effect and so on. White hair spray paint will give you exactly what you want with minimal effort.
6. Evenly Apply Your Dye
You want even coverage when you apply the dye, so use a brush. In order to apply evenly, start with dry hair and work in sections. Work from top to bottom starting with your front bangs (if you have any), then work on one side of your head at a time. Your back will be last because it’s more difficult to see what needs to be applied there with all the other parts in between!
7. Wear Gloves (Always)
If you are going to dye your hair, wear gloves!
Rubber gloves are best because they protect your hands from stains and can help prevent skin irritation. The only downside is that rubber can dry out your finger tips if worn for too long but there’s a solution for that: plastic bags! Use plastic bags on the tips of your fingers when applying dye (like I did in the picture above).
It’s also important to protect all 10 nails with some kind of chemical barrier before even thinking about putting any sort of chemicals on them. My favorite way is Vaseline–if applied thickly enough, it will protect you against staining as well as drying out your cuticles and fingertips.
8. Plastic Wrap Your Hair Overnight
This step is optional, but it’s recommended if you want to get the most out of your hair dye. The plastic wrap helps to keep the dye in place while you sleep, which means that when you rinse it off in the morning, there will be less residue on your pillowcase and sheets.
You can use a regular grocery bag instead of a shower cap if that’s what you have on hand – or even plastic wrap (not foil). Just make sure that whatever material you choose doesn’t leak any moisture into your hair!
If you don’t want to sleep with a plastic barrier between yourself and your mattress/pillow/bedding because of allergies or other reasons, feel free to leave this step off completely – just make sure that the dye has had plenty of time to set before rinsing it out!
9. Use a Small Comb to Section Your Hair Before Applying the Dye
Now it’s time to apply the dye. Use a small comb and section your hair into four sections: left, right, front middle and back middle (see image below). Pin these sections up with bobby pins or butterfly clips. Use a small brush or comb to apply the dye to each section separately, starting at the roots and working your way outwards. Once you have applied the dye evenly throughout all of your hair with no streaks, go over it again in order to make sure there are no gaps where some parts may not have been colored enough yet!
10. Color Rinse Instead of Shampooing and Conditioning After Coloring
If you’re dying your hair a cool gray, it will probably be in the same style as most other grays and silvers. That means that you’ll be going for an overall silver tone with slightly darker roots. To keep your color looking fresh and vibrant, use a color rinse instead of shampooing and conditioning after coloring. A color rinse is basically water mixed with vinegar and herbs that help keep the dye in your hair longer than usual. The best part about using one is that it’s super cheap (you can make one yourself) and easy to apply—just add the ingredients to a spray bottle, spritz onto wet hair, let sit for three minutes then rinse with cold water afterwards!
11. Try a Natural DIY Color Rinse to Preserve Color Longer
There are a couple of ways you can use this DIY color rinse to help preserve your natural hair color for longer. You can apply it once a week, or even every other week, to keep your gray look from fading away.
Strawberry and lemon juice work really well as ingredients in these rinses because they have high acidity levels that naturally strip away dirt and oil from the scalp without damaging the hair shaft itself. This helps keep your scalp clean so that it doesn’t cause problems with sebum production–which leads to dandruff-like flakes on your head!
12. Moisturize Your Hair Weekly with Coconut Oil or Almond Oil (or Both)
Coconut oil is a natural substance made from coconuts. It’s used for many things, including cooking and cosmetic products. The health benefits of coconut oil are numerous, including an increase in metabolism and improved digestion. Coconut oil can also strengthen your hair, which makes it a great option for adding color to your locks.
Almond oil is another natural product that can be used to give your hair that cool gray look! Almond oil has many benefits such as moisturizing dry skin cells and strengthening weak nails. When applied topically to the scalp it helps reduce dandruff symptoms by exfoliating dead skin cells on the scalp (which causes flakes). You may want to consider both coconut and almond oils because they work together synergistically when mixed together—this combination is called ‘coconut-almond’!
13. Use Shampoo Specifically Designed for Color-Treated Hair Once Per Week
Once a week, you’ll want to use a shampoo specifically designed for color-treated hair. This will help keep your strands from getting dull and dry. You can also use a color rinse in place of shampooing, but only once per week. The rinse should be used when your hair feels especially dirty or greasy (I recommend doing this after washing your face at night) and then rinsing it out thoroughly before going to bed.
If you don’t want to spend money on store-bought products, consider making your own DIY version! There are some great recipes online that include ingredients like honey and apple cider vinegar—just make sure they’re natural so they won’t strip away any dye on your hair shafts!
14. Be Gentle with your Color-Treated Gray Tresses; Brush with the Grain, Starting at the Ends of Your Hair
- Be Gentle with your Color-Treated Gray Tresses; Brush with the Grain, Starting at the Ends of Your Hair
If you have color-treated gray hair and want to keep it looking bright and beautiful, be gentle! Use a soft bristle brush (or wide-tooth comb) to gently work your way up from the ends of your hair, brushing in one direction only (with the direction of growth). This will help keep your color treatments vibrant longer. If you have tight curls or kinks in your hair that make detangling difficult, use a leave-in conditioner on wet locks before getting started on a daily basis. The conditioner will help soften and remove knots as you brush through each section carefully.
15. Get Creative with Styling to Make the Most of Your Gray Look! Think Ladies in Lavender and Flowers in Her Hair! A Hippy Witch! A Steampunk Ghost! The Options Are Endless!
Once you’ve dyed your hair gray, you’re going to want to make the most of it! The best way to do this is by styling your hair in a unique and creative way. Don’t be afraid to get creative with accessories like lavender flowers and other Halloween-themed hair accessories. Try styling your new look into a hippy witch or steampunk ghost! You could even go as the Wicked Witch of the West from Wizard of Oz if that’s more up your alley.
