How To

1. Pick Your Color

There are a lot of different shades of purple that you can choose from. Purple hair dye ranges from dark plum to lilac to lavender and everything in between. The first step is to decide what shade you’d like your hair color to be. Maybe this is something that’s already been sorted out for you by your natural coloring, but if not, here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • What color would look best on me?
  • What color would work best with my skin tone?
  • Do I want cool tones or warm tones?

You don’t have to go with a darker shade if it doesn’t feel right for your personality—just make sure whatever shade you choose matches the rest of the colors in your wardrobe (and skin tone). You’ll want something that complements what makes up who you are!

2. Choose a brand

If you want to dye your hair purple, but aren’t sure which brand is right for you, consider the following:

  • Which brand will give me the best long-lasting color?
  • Which brand gives the most vibrant colors?
  • What color will cover my gray hairs?
  • What color will cover dark hair?
  • What color will cover red hair. In addition to covering gray hair and dark hair well, this particular shade should also help counteract yellow tones in blonde or light brown hues. If you have red locks and want a more subtle alternative to bright violet or royal blue shades that are more common on Instagram stars with daring looks (i.e., Rihanna), this option may be just what you’re looking for!

3. Get your supplies!

You’re ready to dye—but before you start, make sure you have all of the following supplies:

  • Gloves
  • Hair clips
  • Old towel or plastic wrap (to protect the bathroom floor)
  • Shower cap or old shower cap (for your hair)
  • Coloring bowl and mixing brush (we recommend a copper-plated brass bowl that’s 3-4 inches deep) and an old nylon brush from a paintbrush set. We also recommend using rubber gloves so that if you get any dye on your hands it won’t stain them permanently (and not just for fun).

4. Wash your hair in cold water, and do NOT condition

  • Wash your hair in cold water, and do NOT condition

This is the most important part of dyeing your hair purple! If you want to make sure that the colour sticks to your hair, then it’s best to wash it with cold water (NOT hot). Hot water can actually cause the dye to wash out prematurely. If you’re using a box of dye and following instructions on the box, then this step shouldn’t be an issue for you!

5. Rinse your hair, then towel dry it until it’s damp but not dripping wet.

Once your hair is dry and you’re ready to rinse, use a clean, soft towel to pat it until it’s damp but not dripping wet. Dampness is key; if you leave your hair too wet, the dye won’t take as well. Now turn on the shower and let warm or cold water run over your head for about 5 minutes—the longer you leave it on, the better (up to 10 minutes).

If you have time before applying dye again—which I recommend—wash out with cold water only and condition thoroughly with an intensive treatment like this one from L’Oréal Paris Féria Color Vibrancy Daily Conditioner. You’ll need: 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar mixed into 1 cup of water; apply this mixture after shampooing and rinsing off all traces of shampoo but before conditioning or styling product in order to remove any leftover buildup from previous color treatments that may interfere with subsequent ones at home (they are also great for removing buildup from other types).

6. Mix the dye

Now it’s time to mix the dye! Here are some things to remember while you do this:

  • Make sure you’re in a well-ventilated area. It’s better if you can open up your windows and/or turn on fans, as the fumes from hair dye are not good for your lungs or eyes. If possible, do this outside or in an open garage with some air circulating around.
  • Lay down old towels or newspaper over your countertops or bathtub. The chemicals in hair dye can stain counters permanently and also eat away at porcelain sinks; protect yourself by laying down a barrier before getting started!
  • Use plastic bowls, paint brushes (not metal), gloves—and whatever other supplies they suggest using according to the directions on the box of whatever brand of purple you choose.

7. Apply the dye

You’re almost there! Step 7 is to apply the dye. Make sure you wear gloves, as the dye can stain your skin and clothes. Apply it to your roots first, working your way down to the ends. Try to get as much of it on your hair as possible; this will help cover any pale spots that remain after washing out some excess water. If you have a tinting brush (one with metal bristles), use it to get an even coat of color throughout each section of hair.

8. Wait for the color to develop, and then rinse until water runs clear.

After about 30 minutes, check your hair in the mirror. The color will be more intense if you left it on for longer than 45 minutes; however, if you’re not happy with the results, there is no harm in rinsing out and starting again. If you’re satisfied with how your hair looks at this point, rinse until all of the dye has been removed from your strands (this should take a few minutes).

9. Condition! You want to keep that color looking vibrant! Use a good shampoo and conditioner made for colored hair

Conditioning is an important part of keeping your hair healthy. Using a good shampoo and conditioner made for colored hair will help keep your color looking vibrant, and it will keep your hair soft and shiny!

Dying your hair purple is easy if you follow these steps!

  • You will need: a rubber band, conditioner, a towel
  • Follow these steps in order:
  • Section hair into 4 parts using the rubber band and use your hands to comb out any knots. Make sure you don’t skip this step as it is critical to getting even color distribution throughout your hair.
  • Rinse with warm water until all of the conditioner is out of your hair (you may need to do this twice since dyeing tends to make it more porous than normal). If necessary, rinse again with cool water so the pH of your scalp is neutralized before applying product again since that can affect how well dye takes hold on skin or scalp tissue!
  • Add two squirts of Purple Haze Hair Dye Creme into one bowl filled with hot water; mix until fully dissolved then add more hot water if needed–but not too much because you’re going for consistency here! The amount needed depends on how much product has been mixed into solution before adding hot liquid so pay close attention when mixing – especially if using multiple colors at once!
