How to Cope with Aging Hair
Causes of Aging Hair and Scalp
Aging hair and scalp can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, environmental damage and hormonal changes. It’s not just your age that will determine if you have aging hair—stress, diet and lifestyle choices also play a role in how quickly your locks start to dull.
Signs of Aging Hair and Scalp
- Thinning hair and hair loss: The most obvious sign of aging hair is thinning or loss of hair. This may be so gradual that you don’t notice it until you see your hair falling out in clumps. You could also see little bald patches on the crown of your head or at the back, making your scalp visible.
- Dryness and dullness: Another common problem with aging is dryness and dullness, which makes your tresses appear lifeless and rough-looking, even if they are healthy enough to grow normally.
- Dandruff: Dandruff can be caused by all sorts of things but when it occurs due to hormonal changes due to aging, we call this seborrheic dermatitis (also known as “cradle cap”). This condition usually affects people between the ages 45-65 years old; however, younger people may also suffer from this condition if they have an autoimmune disorder like lupus erythematosus (LE). Symptoms include greasy skin flakes on their scalp accompanied by itching or pain in addition to having more frequent dandruff outbreaks than normal.* Scalp dryness: As we age our bodies go through many changes including our hormones so it’s not uncommon for some people over 50 years old suffer from dry scalp conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis.* In addition to these common signs there are others including scaly patches – these can look like small patches on parts where there are no hairs left growing out yet still remain on top layer otherwise known as “dead skin cells”, yellowing around edges where new growth starts forming underneath existing hairs; split ends – These appear after a period where
Products for Aging Hair and Scalp
To get a handle on your aging hair, it’s important to identify the issues and understand what they mean.
- Shedding: This can be one of the most frustrating problems associated with “old” hair. When you lose more than 50% of your strands each day, it’s going to show up everywhere: in your brush, on your clothes and even sometimes in your food! Some people may also experience increased shedding after shampooing or wearing their hair up for a certain amount of time. If you think this is happening to you, try using a product like Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3 ($63) while shampooing or conditioning (it works best when applied at least 20 minutes before styling). Once applied, let it sit overnight before rinsing out completely in the morning—but remember not to add any other product afterwards as this one is meant only for maintenance purposes!* Breakage*: Upkeep is key here; if left unattended over time breakage can lead directly back into shedding.* Thinning/Loss*: Luckily there are plenty of products on offer today that address both thinning and loss together (and separately) through various techniques such as plumping agents which help increase blood flow near follicles by constricting tiny capillaries nearby.* Dryness/Brittleness: Products containing silicone will help seal moisture into hair shafts without making them feel heavy.* Frizziness*: Look for serums containing ingredients such as keratin amino acids which help smooth cuticles down by coating them with oil so moisture doesn’t escape when exposed too long under hot styling tools
If you think that you have some of these symptoms chances are that you might have aging hair. You can combat aging hair by using products.

Don’t use products with alcohol in them as they will dry out your hair and make it brittle.
Wash your hair every 2-3 days instead of every day as this is too frequent for any type of hair, and especially for aging hair because it causes more breakage and split ends (which lead to broken strands).
Use a moisturizer designed specifically for dry scalps – this will help reduce the amount of oil produced by your scalp and keep it from becoming dry or flaky.
