My dream was to go from medium brown to platinum blonde, but I didn’t want to be one of those girls who ends up with orange hair.

My dream was to go from medium brown to platinum blonde, but I didn’t want to be one of those girls who ends up with orange hair or a brassy mess. So I did some research and found out that you can’t just go from dark brown to platinum blonde without toning it first.

I’m not going to lie: I was pretty nervous about this process, but luckily my stylist at the salon made me feel at ease by explaining everything in detail beforehand. She also told me how often she’d need to retouch my highlights (because they will grow out over time) and what products would help keep my hair healthy during this transformation—and then she did it! It took her two hours (and lots of breaks), but now I have gorgeous light blonde strands and all that maintenance seems worth it because my stylist knows exactly what she’s doing.

My second mistake was talking too much.

When you’re at the salon, don’t talk too much. If you need to explain something to your stylist, make sure that they ask you questions about what you want and how it will be used. Some people get very nervous in a salon chair and start talking way too much about things that aren’t relevant to the cut or color service being done on them. My second mistake was talking too much!

That’s not to say that if your hair stylist doesn’t ask questions then they’re doing a bad job—they may just not be interested in talking with their clients on a personal level (and that’s fine). But if this is something important for you, then it might be worth asking up front: “So do we have time today?” “Can we chat about what my goals are?” “Are there any other things I should know before we get started?”

If all goes well and your answers are satisfactory, then chances are good your styling experience will go smoothly as well!

Preparing for my new hair color.

  • If you want a light blonde look, it’s best to go to a professional.
  • You can use a color remover to lighten your hair gradually.
  • If you go too light, you will end up with orange hair. This is because the bleach makes the pigments from your natural dye appear more yellow than they normally would on their own.
  • Bleaching your hair is damaging for the follicles and can cause breakage over time when done frequently or improperly.

To make the transition from brown to platinum less damaging, I decided to grow out my current color for two months and come in to have it lightened again at the salon.

To make the transition from brown to platinum less damaging, I decided to grow out my current color for two months and come in to have it lightened again at the salon. (This is not necessary; you can use our directions below.)

For my own DIY roots touch-up, I used a professional-quality color product (Clairol Natural Instincts) and a home bleach kit (Bleach Away by Wella). The key is using a color-safe bleach, like Color Oops or Bleach Away, for your root touch-ups. These are formulated with ingredients that will help block damage from lightening your hair too much.

I also recommend using a shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated for chemically treated hair (like the L’Oréal Paris EverCreme Cleanse Shampoo & Conditioner). If you use drugstore shampoos/conditioners regularly on your blonde/highlighted hair, then switch over to these instead of whatever brand you were using before! One thing’s for sure – going platinum blonde isn’t easy.

One thing’s for sure—going platinum blonde isn’t easy. Hair colorists can do it in one sitting, but you don’t have that luxury at home. It’s going to take time and commitment, and even then it might not work out perfectly. You’ll probably have to go back to the salon and get some touch-ups once or twice before you’re satisfied with the final results.

You can expect your hair color to fade over time anyway because platinum is a very light shade of blonde and will tend towards a more yellowish tone as it ages. If you want your color to last as long as possible (and who doesn’t?), you should use high-quality products that won’t damage your hair when applied correctly and follow all instructions carefully!

In some ways, the transition is indeed possible at home.

“I have been a hair stylist for over 10 years and I have never seen someone achieve this look… but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done,” says Kevin Mancuso of Salon Bleu in NYC. “Bleaching or lightening your hair to a blonde shade can be tricky because there are so many variables and not everyone’s hair responds the same way to chemical processes. If you decide to go with this method, it will take some trial and error.”

But if you’re starting with dark or reddish-brown color, like mine, you are going to have to see a stylist eventually.

If you’re starting with dark or reddish-brown color, like mine, you are going to have to see a stylist eventually. If your hair is really dark and not just naturally blonde roots, it will take multiple sessions for the colorist to get the brightness right (and even then, they may need to touch up after a few weeks).

Also note that this is an at-home product—it’s not meant for professional use in salons or on people who desire an exact shade of blonde. It doesn’t provide as much coverage as other products would and isn’t intended for long-term use.

Having great tools also makes a big difference.

Having great tools also makes a big difference. A good hair dryer makes a huge difference. For example, if you use a hair dryer with ionic technology, your hair will dry faster and smoother. You can also use a straightener or curling iron after dyeing your hair in order to style it.

An even better option is to buy one with a diffuser attachment that helps prevent heat damage while keeping your strands healthy.

Still, even though it was worth it in the end and I love my new platinum color, getting there wasn’t fun.

You can do it! I know this because I did it. And guess what? It was worth it. So don’t be discouraged if things don’t go 100% according to plan—just roll with the punches and have realistic expectations about what you’re going to get in return for your efforts. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help from friends who are more experienced with hair coloring than you are (or from me!).

Finally, be patient as well as persistent when going out on a limb like I did with my platinum blonde hair color experiment. If all else fails and you really want something but it doesn’t look quite perfect…well then maybe just think of it as art instead 🙂

If you are considering trying this process on your own hair, be sure that you know what you are doing first!

  • Experience is the best teacher. Be sure to consult with someone who has platinum blonde hair before attempting it yourself. You may even want to take a class in order to get some hands-on experience with these kinds of techniques, especially if someone else will be applying the products for you and/or if your hair is very dark and needs bleaching.
  • Do your research before diving in. Talk with professionals and other people who have lightened their own hair at home (or gone through one of the many at-home services available) and ask them what they would do differently next time around—because there will be a next time! If they were unsatisfied with their results, find out why so that you can avoid those mistakes yourself; if they love how things turned out, ask them what steps led up to that final result so that those steps become a part of your routine too!
  • See a professional if starting with dark hair or wanting more than just blonde highlights/lowlights (i.e., all over platinum). This can save time and energy as well as make sure no single strand gets missed when being processed due to its location within an already highlighted section–which could result in unevenness when all pieces have been processed together later on down the road after washing again…”

My dream was to go from medium brown to platinum blonde – here’s how I did it

I’ve always been drawn to the look of platinum blonde hair. It’s not just because it looks amazing, but also because it has a sense of luxury and elegance that I think can be achieved in so many ways.

Once I decided to go through with the process, it was important to me that I find someone who could do my hair at home because there are no salons near me that offer this service. It took some doing on Google and YouTube, but eventually I found some step-by-step videos for light blonde hair color (I wanted mine even lighter).
