The Importance of Using a Hair Color Inspiration Image
Hair color inspiration images are a great way to communicate what you want to your stylist. They’re also a great way to start feeling comfortable about the next hair color appointment, because sometimes verbal descriptions don’t always convey what you want. For example: “I want it a little darker, but not brown. And I want it to be more red than pink. And I don’t mind if there is any gray at all in my hair; just as long as no one can tell that I have gray in my hair, and that they think that this color looks great on me! But also make sure that no one thinks my natural color is actually this shade of red. Can you do all of those things? No pressure!”
Don’t worry, these kinds of requests don’t happen very often (thank goodness). If a client comes into our salon with such specific instructions for their new look, we usually suggest starting over by showing them some photo examples of past clients who had similar requests—and then asking them which version they like best.
Find the Color You Love
The next step of the process is finding a color that you love. There are a few ways to do this, but I recommend checking out Pinterest. The site is great for seeing what colors are trending and gives you access to thousands of images from other people’s boards. You can search for “hair color inspiration” or “hair coloring inspiration,” and it will show you all sorts of photos with different shades and tones (and even colors). You’ll want to look through these photos carefully because each one has its own personality and vibe, so find something that speaks to you!
Once you’ve found some images that appeal to your senses (and maybe even influence them), it’s time to narrow down your choices into a single shade. This may sound like an easy task, but trust me: It’s not! When choosing which hue works best with your complexion and hair type, it helps if there’s someone who knows what they’re doing standing behind the mirror telling them how beautiful they look so they don’t doubt themselves after making such big changes.”
Share the Inspo Image With Your Stylist
Once you have your inspiration image, make sure to share it with your stylist. You’ll want to communicate clearly about what you like and don’t like about the image, as well as what length you’d like for your new style. Letting them know how long you want the hair to be is crucial, because if they don’t understand what length you’re looking for then their work will turn out differently than expected!
It’s also important that they know the texture of your hair—this can help them decide which technique will be most effective in achieving results similar to those of the model in question.

If you’re feeling nervous about a new shade, seeing it in person can be a huge help before your appointment. You may even find that once you see the color on yourself, you don’t even want to go through with it! The more time leading up to your appointment that you spend figuring out exactly what shade will look best on your skin tone, the better off both parties will be when we get started at our salon.
Using an image will help ensure that we’re all headed in the right direction during each step of the process — from choosing what products are best suited for your hair type and length; through application; all the way until aftercare tips are given so there aren’t any unexpected surprises later down the line. And if there is something less than perfect about how things turn out (which happens sometimes), having reference material readily available helps prevent miscommunications between stylist and client so everyone feels good about their experience together
