How to Dye Your Hair Brown at Home

decide the shade of brown

The first step in choosing your hair color is to decide which shade of brown you want. If you have light skin and dark eyes, you may want to choose a lighter color so that it helps your face look more awake. If you have fair skin and blue or green eyes, choose something darker so that the contrast between the two colors looks striking when they’re paired together. You can also consider whether or not you’re willing to spend time maintaining your color over time—if so, then choose a brand with semi-permanent dyes that will fade after several washes instead of permanent ones (which are more likely to stain your pillowcases).

Once these considerations are made, pick out some brands with different shades for each one. In general though: redheads don’t do well with brown; blondes should stick with caramel tones; brunettes should try chestnut or mahogany hues for best results!

pick your method

The first step is to choose your method. There are a variety of ways you can dye your hair brown, ranging from box dyes to professional treatments.

  • Box dyes: These are the most common type of home hair dye. They come in convenient boxes and usually require mixing with water before application, though some do not require mixing at all. The applicator brush is typically built into the lid of the bottle so that it’s ready for use when you take it out of its packaging and open it up!
  • Salon or professional treatment: If you’re willing to spend more money on dying than on other necessities like food or clothing (and really who isn’t?), then this may be what you choose! Professional salons often offer special services such as cut-and-color packages or even just straight-up color alone without any added frills like cuts or styles. In addition to costing more than doing it yourself at home (which costs nothing), they also require booking an appointment beforehand so there won’t be any waiting around while everyone else gets their hair done too – which is always good news when dealing with something as important as a new look!
  • Henna: This natural alternative uses plant-based ingredients rather than chemicals found in many commercial brands; however due to its lower porosity level compared traditional dye types it tends result darker results over time rather than gradually fading away like others might do – though this could simply mean less upkeep overall since there won’t need re-dying every few months.”

find the supplies you need

The first thing you’ll need are the supplies. These can be purchased at your local drugstore or online, depending on your preference. Here’s what I recommend:

  • Gloves: You don’t want to dye your hands too!
  • Hair dye (brown): This is the most important part of this entire process. You’re going to want something that matches your natural color perfectly for a realistic effect; if it doesn’t match too well, it might not look like you dyed it at all. I went with L’Oreal Preference because it was cheap and easy for me to find at my local Target, but there are tons of other brands out there that could work just as well. Just make sure they have enough shades of brown so that you can find one that looks right on you!
  • Hair dye brush: You’ll need something small enough so that when we put our hair up in plaits later on in this blog post, they don’t get stuck inside the bristles while trying not to mess up any strands of loose hair around them during application time (this would be very bad).

test a strand

To test your dye, grab a strand of hair and try it out. If it’s not the right shade, you can always try another color. You can also use a strand to see if the color is too dark or light for your liking.

dye your hair

When you’re dying your hair brown at home, the first thing to do is apply the color to your roots. Once they’re covered in dye, it’s time to work your way down towards the ends of your hair. Use a brush (or an old comb) to apply color onto those roots and coat them thoroughly. Let this sit for about 15 minutes so that the dye can properly absorb into those strands before rinsing out all traces of dye with water. You should then dry off your newly dyed tresses with a towel or let them air dry overnight by hanging upside down from something like a chair or shower rod!

Next, style your new do however you want it – whether it’s straightening or curling it up into funky waves doesn’t matter as long as it looks great on YOU!

keep your new color fresh

As you go about your daily activities and maintain your hair, be sure to keep the following in mind:

  • Wash less! If you’re tempted to shampoo every day, try going a little longer in between washes (a few days) to prevent over-drying. If your hair is still greasy, try using a clarifying shampoo once per week instead of every day. * Use color-safe shampoo and conditioner. Your stylist will likely recommend this for all newly colored clients, but it’s especially important if you’re trying out a new shade at home. This will help prevent fading and keep away brassiness from sun exposure.* Use a shower filter! Water contains minerals that can strip color from hair over time—particularly chlorine and hard water minerals like iron or manganese—so install one while you’re at it.* Avoid swimming pools! While enjoying summer fun might seem like an obvious recommendation for keeping your color fresh…you’d be surprised how often people forget their swim caps and spend hours under water (and near steam rooms), which can strip even the most resistant dye jobs within weeks of application without proper protection.* Avoid hot tools! Heat damage is one of the fastest ways for hair dye to fade out over time; we recommend using low heat styling tools when possible (blow dryers should have cool or cold settings!) or just avoid them altogether if possible until after 6 weeks post-application.* Ask your stylist for tips on how best keep your new look fresh throughout summer months ahead; they’ve got all sorts of tricks up their sleeves that could mean better looking locks all season long!
