How to Change Your Hair Color with Kool Aid Colors
Choose a shade of watercolors color.
Choose a shade of watercolor colors that matches your natural color. If you have blonde, red, or black hair, use one of the dark shades to cover gray hair. If you want to cover dark hair with a lighter shade, choose one of these colors: yellow (for light brown), blue (for medium brown), orange (for dark brown), pink (for black).
If you want to cover gray with a lighter shade, choose any color except for red and blue—red will turn your grays red and blue will turn them green!
Mix water and your watercolor colors liquid or powder.
You’ll want to mix your watercolor colors liquid or powder with your water in a ratio of 1/2 tsp. of color per one cup of water. Once you’ve mixed the two together, you can add more color if you’d like it to be bolder, or less for a lighter effect.
Now that you have your ingredients ready, it’s time to start mixing! Mixing can be done with either an electric mixer or by hand, but I recommend using an electric mixer as this will ensure that all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated together and won’t contain any clumps of unmixed paint (which could ruin your final result). Mixing times vary depending on what type of watercolor paints you’re using—for example, Kool Aid Colors require only 30 seconds-1 minute whereas regular food coloring requires 3-5 minutes.
Temperature also affects how long each set mixes: Kool Aid Colors should not be heated above 40° C (104° F) while regular food coloring must be heated between 85° F – 110° F (30° C – 43° C).
Apply the mixture to clean, dry hair.
Apply the mixture to clean, dry hair. I know this may seem obvious, but if you don’t have time for a full wash and blow-dry, at least make sure your hair is thoroughly towel-dried before applying the color.
Work in sections for more even coating.
If you want to dye your hair a color other than brown, it is important to apply the color evenly. To ensure that this happens, work in sections to apply the Kool Aid colors. You can choose to start from the nape of the neck and work your way up or from the top and work your way down. If not sure about how long or thick your hair is, use a comb to part it into sections so that you have an idea where each section ends (this will make it easier for you later on).
If you have chosen to divide up your hair into sections using a comb (or some other method), then now would be an excellent time for step 2!
Let it sit for about 30 minutes.
It’s important to note that the minimum amount of time you should let the mixture sit on your hair is 30 minutes. The longer you leave it in, the deeper your color will be. If you’re going for a very dark shade of red or blue and want it to last for more than just a few washes, then keep reading!
After 30 minutes have passed (or however long you’ve decided), remove your shower cap and rinse out all of the mixture with cold water. This will wash away all excess dye from your strands so that they aren’t stained or discolored when exposed to sunlight or other sources of heat after this step. You don’t need to worry about rinsing out too much dye because any leftover color will wash away easily when combined with shampoo during your normal wash routine later on down the road!
Rinse with cold water.
Once you’ve rinsed, it’s time to set the color. To do this, you’ll need some setting lotion or mousse (the brand doesn’t matter). Apply it evenly throughout all of your hair but try not to use too much, because this will make your hair feel greasy and dirty.
Now that you’ve got the dye in and set, let it sit for two hours. This is important because if you put on a coat too soon, it won’t be as vibrant when it dries! If you want to speed things up a bit with an additional chemical process called oxidation (I don’t recommend this personally), apply hydrogen peroxide after rinsing out the hair dye—but again: only if done at home by yourself! The risk of messing up is high enough without adding extra chemicals into the mix.
Experiment with wicking styles and see what colors you come up with!
This can be done by using a color wheel, which will help you figure out what colors complement each other.
Use your imagination and try out different combinations to see what looks good on you!
