How to Achieve Different Hair Colors Using Just One Product

Shampoo

Shampooing your hair with a sulfate-free shampoo will help keep it from getting brassy. The foamy lather of most shampoos contains sulfates, which strip your hair of the natural oils that maintain its color. A sulfate-free shampoo will do less damage to your hair and scalp, making it easier to achieve a consistent shade over time.

When choosing a shampoo, look for one with low pH levels (a lower number is better). Shampoos with higher pH levels promote brassiness by stripping away more of the pigments that give darker colors their depth and richness.

Conditioner

If you’re looking to change your hair color without using any dye, conditioner can be a great tool. It won’t change the color of your hair—but it will help maintain it. If you’re planning on using a semi-permanent dye but want to keep some of your natural tones, try using conditioner to tone down the newness of the color. Conditioner is also important for keeping your hair moisturized and healthy overall, which will make it last longer between visits to the salon!

Gel

Gel is a great product to use for achieving different hair colors. Gel is typically clear, so it can be applied to create a natural look or a funky one. To begin coloring your hair with gel, make sure you have the right amount of product on hand—how much you need will depend on what color you want to achieve.

To apply gel:

  • Comb out your hair thoroughly with a wide-toothed comb or detangling brush.
  • Squeeze some gel into your palm and rub them together to activate it (this step can be skipped if you’re using an aerosol spray).
  • Massage the product into your scalp and work through all of the strands until they’re evenly coated from root to tip. Be careful not too tug at any knots (they may loosen up over time).

Color-enhancing shampoo and conditioner

  • Color-enhancing shampoo and conditioner
  • Use on dark hair or when trying to achieve a lighter color.
  • Use on blond hair. This will help to brighten up your blonde and make it appear more golden.
  • Use on red-haired hair. The color will be amplified for a much bolder look than usual!
  • Use if you want your light brown hair to look darker, or if you want your dark brown hair to look lighter (but not platinum).
  • Use for silver/grey/white tresses!

Temporary spray

Temporary spray is a great way to test out a color before committing to it. If you’re not sure about going blonde, for example, but want some highlights in your hair—temporary spray might be the way to go. It’s also great for adding rainbow highlights around the face without having to worry about messing up your base color.

Temporary sprays are not permanent so if you don’t like the results (or change your mind), they wash out easily with shampoo or other clarifying products. They’re perfect for special occasions like weddings where you might want bright red lipstick or green eyeliner but don’t want those colors on your face forever!

You don’t need a ton of hair products to get great colors.

You don’t need a ton of hair products and tools to achieve these different looks. You can do it with just one product!

For example, if you want red hair and already use a color-enhancing shampoo or conditioner, try using that product as your temporary spray. After washing your hair as normal, apply the color-enhancing products to clean strands and let them sit for 1 minute before rinsing away all excess dye. The longer you leave it on (from 2 minutes up), the more vibrant your final shade will be but also the higher chance it may stain your skin or pillowcase if any drips down onto them during application.
