A Dozen Steps To Get The Perfect Henna For You

1. Henna Powder.

  • Henna Powder
  • Get a good quality henna powder. This is important because the color of your final product will depend on it, but also because synthetic dyes can be dangerous to use in henna applications.
  • Mix the henna with water in a bowl or plastic container (that you can throw away after), wearing gloves if possible. You don’t need much more than 1 part powder per 2 parts water depending on how dark you want your hair to be and how thick it is; just play with it until you get something that looks right!

2. Tea.

  • Tea

Natural henna is easy to find and use, but you may need to experiment with different brands and types of tea to get the exact color you’re looking for. Black tea, green tea, or white tea can all be used in this step. The key is finding a dye that matches your skin tone and hair color as closely as possible—there’s no such thing as too dark of a dye!

Mix two cups of water with 1/4 cup loose-leaf black tea (or whatever kind suits your taste), then simmer on low heat until it’s reduced by half. Allow the mixture to cool completely before using it for application (the longer it sits around unattended, the more likely it will stain). For best results use just enough liquid—too much will make your hair look darker than desired without being able to dry fully first!

3. Conditioner or Honey.

You can also mix in conditioner or honey to your henna paste. These ingredients won’t thicken the paste, but they will make it less slippery. This is a good thing if you want the henna to sit on your head for longer than it would with water alone.

Honey is actually a humectant and great for hair too! So adding it to your henna will help keep moisture in your strands and make them more shiny overall.

4. Yup, Henna is Messy, be prepared with gloves and a Hair Cap.

While it’s fun to get henna on your hands and clothes, it can be a little annoying. To avoid this problem, always wear gloves and a hair cap when applying the henna. I recommend using old disposable gloves and an old bandana or scarf as your hair cap.

If you don’t want to spend money on supplies, then use some fabric from around the house (an old towel or sheet) that you won’t need again for anything else, but don’t use something like cotton or silk because these will stain permanently if exposed to too much dye!

5. Get your hair wet and apply the henna paste to your hair shafts, not the roots of your hair.

To begin, you will need to wet your hair so that the henna paste can penetrate it. Add a cup of water and stir in the henna powder until it becomes a thick paste. It’s best to apply it when your hair is damp because then the henna will stick easily and won’t run off into your face when you apply it.

6. Cover with a hair cap and wrap in a towel to keep warm (for better results) and allow the henna to dry by leaving on for 3-5 hours (or longer if you want darker color).

  • Cover with a hair cap and wrap in a towel to keep warm (for better results) and allow the henna to dry by leaving on for 3-5 hours (or longer if you want darker color).
  • You will begin to see the color working into your hair after 30 minutes so don’t be alarmed if it looks like nothing happened!*

7. Wash the henna out of your hair with a sulfate free shampoo until it’s all out, which could take a couple tries depending on how much henna you used and how long you left it in for.

Now that you have your henna in, it’s time to wash it out. You’ve spent so many hours getting the perfect henna color, and now you want to make sure that it lasts for as long as possible. Washing your hair with a sulfate-free shampoo will help keep your color vibrant and looking fresh.

If you don’t want to use shampoo on its own, there are other options available: conditioner and a comb can also be used! Just put conditioner on the part of your hair where the henna was applied, then gently comb through until all the dye has been removed from that area of your scalp. Then repeat this process until all of your hair is free from henna dye (this could take multiple times).

8. Let hair air dry or blow dry if you’re impatient to find out what color your hair is! 🙂

  • Let hair air dry or blow dry if you’re impatient to find out what color your hair is! 🙂

When it comes to henna, there’s no need to rush! Your hair will be ready for the world in its own time (and with all of our patience). If you’re impatient and want a sneak peek at the color, try letting your hair air dry or using a blow dryer on low heat. Just make sure that your hair is completely dried before making any judgments.

9. Once my hair is completely dry I can see how long I need to leave henna in to get desired color because it oxidizes a bit more once completely dry so don’t freakout if it looks lighter when your hair is wet haha but just know that once it’s dry you will love the color!

  • Henna will stain your skin so be careful not to get any on your face or hands! The good news is that the stain rubs off pretty easily with soap and water so if you do get some on yourself there’s no need to panic 🙂
  • If you plan on using henna (or any other chemical dye) again in the future, be sure to follow up with an apple cider vinegar rinse after washing out the henna: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mn-a4Qb_Hs0&list=PLI1g8yTcY6U7F6KjMDlx0gF4fOeZiJjH&index=26

Apply henna to get the perfectly colored hair for you!!

Henna is a natural way to dye your hair, and it has the added benefit of being good for it. It is messy, but that’s part of the fun! It might take a few hours or even overnight to apply henna, but once you’re done with all your steps (which are outlined below), you’ll have gorgeous red or brown hair that lasts up to six months.

Henna can be messy so make sure you do this in an area where there is no carpeting!
