What is a hair colour allergy test?
A hair dye allergy test is an at-home kit that will allow you to determine if you have any type of allergic reaction to the chemicals found in the dyes and toners that are used in salons. These kits are available to purchase online or from your local salon, and they’re super easy to use: all you need is some petroleum jelly (or Vaseline), a cotton ball or swab, and some water! Simply apply the petroleum jelly around your scalp where the dye would normally be applied during treatment, then wait for 30 minutes without washing off any excess product on your skin before applying one drop of dye onto each area covered by petroleum jelly (if applicable). That’s it!
What is an allergy test? How often do I need one?
An allergy test is a simple procedure that involves patch testing your skin with chemicals you might be allergic to. Your doctor uses this information to determine whether or not you are allergic, and if so, which chemical(s) is causing your reaction. This can help them decide what treatments are best suited for you.
Here’s how an allergy test works:
- You’ll prick your skin with small needles containing different chemicals that may cause an allergic reaction (you won’t feel any pain).
- The areas pricked will turn red after 24 hours as they heal over the course of several days. If they don’t react at all, allergy testing is complete! If they do react, it could mean one of two things: either there was no reaction from those particular chemicals or another substance was responsible for the redness instead (e.g., nickel). If so, you’ll need another round of tests until everything has been ruled out or confirmed – then we can move on from there!
A skin test is done to see if you have a sensitivity or reaction to the ingredients in the colour product. If a rash develops on the inside of your elbow or behind your ear, you will be unable to have your service that day and may require a consultation with a doctor before you are able to book a future appointment.

The skin test should be carried out 48 hours before your colour appointment and does not need to be booked in advance. We just ask that you notify us when booking whether or not you would like it done as part of your appointment so we can ensure that enough time is allowed for this process.
It’s recommended that this test is carried out 48 hours prior to any colour service to ensure no allergic reaction occurs. The beauty team at Skin Vitality Medical Clinic recommend performing an allergy test every time you change products as well as every time you get your hair coloured.

What are the symptoms of a hair colour allergy? How do I know if I’m having an allergic reaction?
Itching, burning or redness of the scalp are all symptoms of a hair colour allergy. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
Also, do not ignore any allergic reaction that may be caused by hair dye products. Allergic reactions can vary from mild to severe and sometimes even dangerous. If you have any concerns about an allergic reaction after using a dye product please contact your doctor or go to the nearest hospital emergency room immediately for treatment.
If you believe you’re having a reaction it is best not to wash your hair until you speak with your doctor as this could worsen your condition and make it harder for them to diagnose what is causing your symptoms
You may experience itching, burning, or redness of the scalp shortly after applying any hair dye or chemical treatment. Redness, irritation or swelling of the scalp may also occur within minutes of product application and can last for many days. Reactions can become seriously dangerous when swelling affects the airways and restricts breathing.
