Why is Chemical Hair Color So Bad? A blog about the hair dye ingredients that damage your hair.

The Facts

  • What are the ingredients in chemical hair color?

Chemical hair color is composed of four main ingredients: PPD (paraphenylenediamine), ammonia, hydrogen peroxide and resorcinol. These chemicals react with your natural pigment to create a new shade of hair. They can also cause allergic reactions and rashes on your scalp, which is why it’s important to test a small area before committing to coloring all of your hair.

  • How much damage does chemical dye cause?

The chemicals used in chemical dyes can be quite damaging for both your scalp and follicles—if you’ve ever had an allergic reaction or experienced irritation after getting a dye job done at the salon, you know what I mean! It’s important that these chemicals don’t touch any open wounds on your body (especially if they’re fresh) because they could potentially leave scarring behind if they come into contact with open sores or cuts from shaving or waxing too soon after having colored strands put through their paces.

How are other nations preventing the use of harsh toxins?

The European Union has banned over 1,300 chemicals from hair dye and made it illegal for companies to use them. In contrast, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only banned 30 ingredients—and four are still allowed in non-professional products like conditioners and shampoo for home use.

The EU also sets limits on how much ammonia can be in your dye and requires all companies to list all of their ingredients on their labels so you know what you’re getting into when purchasing a product that could potentially damage your health or even risk your life if not properly handled.

The most harmful ingredients to look out for.

The following chemicals are the worst offenders.

  • P-Phenylenediamine (PPD)
  • Ammonia
  • Resorcinol

Personal Example

I’ve been dyeing my hair for over 10 years. At the beginning I used chemical dyes, but then I learned about all the harmful ingredients in them and switched to a natural brand. I’ve made this switch because of two reasons:

  • I want to avoid any damage caused by chemicals (especially ammonia)
  • Natural products are usually cheaper than chemical ones

Ditch the chemicals and try an all-natural, ammonia-free dye like our new permanent hair color.

If you’re looking for a natural and ammonia-free hair color, we created this permanent hair color with safe ingredients that do not damage your hair. No more harsh chemicals or harsh toxins! Our dye is non-toxic and contains only natural ingredients that are gentle on your hair.
