5 Things to Consider Before you Dye Your Hair Blonde

1. Your Natural Hair Color Matters

  • Do you have naturally black, brown or red hair? If so, you may need to lift your hair color up to 3 or 4 levels first before applying a blonde dye. Brunettes often find that dying their hair blonde works best if they achieve a darker shade first by using a darker color. This is because most blonde dyes contain peroxide and other chemicals that can damage fragile natural brunette hair.
  • Is your hair healthy enough for the process? If it’s been recently damaged by bleaching or colouring, then it’s best not to risk damaging it further. Your stylist will be able to advise on this point too – they’ll know exactly what kind of products are right for your individual situation.

2. Go Slowly

The last thing you want to do is rush the process. It’s tempting, but the only way to make a huge change like this look good is by going slowly and doing it right. If you don’t give your hair time to adjust, it will get damaged and end up looking like straw.

The best way to transition between shades of brown and blonde is with subtle highlights (see my article on highlights here). This lets your natural color show through so there aren’t any harsh lines between tones that would look fake or overdone. If you can’t afford professional help, try using an at-home highlighting kit from Sally Beauty Supply or Target—they’re cheap enough that if one doesn’t work out for you, no big deal!

3. Roots Are OK!

Letting your roots grow out is another great way to break up the monotony of one color all over. If you’re trying to go darker, growing out your dark roots can help make your new color look more natural and give it a more subtle transition from root to tip. This works especially well if you’re going from light brown hair with dark blonde ends (or other shades) at the bottom.

4. Know When to Call in the Pros

  • Call in the Pros

This can be especially important if you are changing hair color by more than three shades. If you have sensitive skin and/or a short time frame to get the job done, we highly recommend having your stylist do it for you. They’ll be able to give you advice on how best to maintain your new look and help ensure that it turns out looking exactly as intended!

5. Blondes Have Fun…But Not as Much as Brunettes

  • Blondes Have Fun…But Not as Much as Brunettes

While it’s true that blondes do have more fun, they don’t have nearly as much fun as brunettes. Why? Well, for one thing, blondes can’t pull off the “don’t care about my hair” look without looking like they don’t care about their hair. If you’re a blonde, it’s going to take some effort on your part to make sure that your locks look good all the time—and not just when you’re wearing them down in an easy updo or low ponytail but every day. You’ll need to brush and dry them often (or use some kind of product). And even then, there will be times when they’ll end up looking flat or just plain blah without any help from a styling tool. Plus those pesky flyaways will always be there! If you’re willing to put in this much work into your appearance each day (or even once a week), then by all means go for it—but if not…then stick with being a brunette because being naturally dark is so much easier than being artificially light!

Do your research before dyeing your hair blonde

Before you begin, it is important that you do your research. Many people try to dye their hair blonde without any knowledge of what can go wrong or how to handle it when things don’t go as expected. There are many factors that need to be taken into account before diving in head first and changing your hair color from brunette to blonde.

It is also extremely important that if you’re planning on dying your hair at home yourself, make sure that this is something that you feel comfortable doing and have the time for. It will take hours for the dye process alone, but then once the dye has been applied and rinsed out of your hair (if done correctly), there will still be a lot more work ahead before it’s actually safe enough to step outside into public with this new look!
