Find Your Perfect Shade of Hair Colour with these 3 Tips

Look for tones that work with your skin tone.

Choosing a hair colour that matches your skin tone can be the difference between looking like an ombre, or looking like you have an ombre. If you don’t know what your skin tone is, it’s likely somewhere between “very pale” and “extremely orange”.

If you have warm skin tones – think: olive, yellow and golden – then look for warmer shades of hair colour such as reds and coppers. However if you have cool skin tones โ€“ think: pinkish-white โ€“ then cool colours like ash browns are your jam! Olive skin tones are a bit more difficult since it’s hard to find one single colour that works for all shades of olive. In this case, try neutral colours such as beige or platinum blondes which will allow the natural undertones in your skin to come through without making them look muddy or dulled down by too much contrast with whatever colour was previously used on top

Use colour comparison to help identify your ideal shade.

  • If your natural hair colour is darker than the desired shade, use a swatch guide to help you find your ideal shade. Colour comparison is an easy way to do this by comparing the colour of your hair with a swatch guide (I recommend using [haircolour.com](https://www.haircolour.com/). These guides have hundreds of shades and even include colour charts, so you can see exactly how each one looks on different skin tones and eye colours.
  • Iโ€™ve used this method many times and it has never failed me! When choosing my own dye palette, I found that the box was not very helpful because it only showed the names of colours without any visual examples inside them (eek!). However, once I compared those names against their actual swatches on the website โ€“ voila! Perfect match achieved!

Make sure you’re talking to your stylist about your new colour choice.

If you’ve never dyed your hair before, have a frank conversation with your stylist about what you’re looking for. They’ll be able to tell you if it’s right for your hair type and whether or not they think it will work with the colour of your natural locks.

If this is an upgrade from what you currently wear, ask them how much maintenance will be involved in maintaining the new shade.

You can find a great hair colour, if you know what factors to look for.

If you want to find the best hair colour for your skin tone and eye colour, then you need to pay attention to three things:

  • Your skin tone
  • Your eye colour (and whether or not your eyes are green, hazel or brown)
  • The season in which youโ€™re born
