Getting Rid of Those Grey Hairs

Silver is the new trend, but sometimes you don’t want to go grey

You may not want to go grey because of cultural reasons. In some cultures, it is considered a sign of power and wisdom. Or maybe you dislike the idea of looking older than you are. Perhaps it’s vanity that prevents you from accepting your greying hair—you don’t want to look old or tired, even though most people would agree that having silver hair gives off an air of charm and class.

Whatever the case may be, there are many reasons for wanting to avoid going gray besides simply not liking it aesthetically; there are also health concerns and career risks associated with this process.

1. Topical treatments

  • Topical treatments:

It’s easy to dismiss minoxidil as the answer to your hair loss woes, but science suggests it may be one of the most effective treatments out there. In a clinical trial, 58% of men who used 5% topical minoxidil saw significant hair growth after two years compared to 5% who used a placebo. The FDA approved this drug for use in women (and men) with pattern baldness in 2014. It’s worth noting that if you start using it at an early age, your chances of regrowing lost strands increase considerably.

  • Hormone therapy:

Women can experience temporary thinning after childbirth and during menopause due to hormone changes; however, these conditions don’t cause permanent hair loss or follicular miniaturization—the process by which normal follicle cells become small or dormant over time. If you experience prolonged thinning that doesn’t respond well to other treatment options (like topical products), your doctor may suggest prescription medications like oral contraceptives or finasteride (Propecia). These drugs help prevent further loss by blocking the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT—the hormone responsible for female pattern baldness—in your scalp

2. Dyeing your hair grey

Dyeing your hair is the most common way to hide grey hairs. It’s also the easiest, because you can do it yourself at home and there are lots of products out there that will help you get rid of those nasty grays.

If you want to dye your hair grey, though—and we highly recommend it—you can’t just pick up any old box from the drugstore. You’ll need a specialist product like this one or this one (available on Amazon). These high-end dyes are made with a special blend of ingredients designed specifically for people who want to cover their gray hairs in silver or white shades.

3. Use supplements

  • Iron is important for healthy hair because it helps produce red blood cells, which in turn carry oxygen to the follicles. Without enough iron, your body will not be able to produce enough red blood cells to keep up with the demand of your hair follicles. In this case, one of two things can happen: Your body will try to compensate by making more white blood cells (which are responsible for fighting infections), or you will start to lose hair in patches or clumps due to lack of oxygen reaching the follicle.
  • Vitamin C helps with the absorption of iron into your body, so you need both vitamin C and iron in order for this process to work properly — and vice versa! If you’re not getting enough vitamin C (from foods like citrus fruits and bell peppers) then it may be harder for your body’s cells (including those in your scalp) to absorb any iron that comes their way; likewise if you aren’t consuming enough iron-rich foods such as beef liver or spinach then it’s going to be hard on those same cells.”

4. Change lifestyle habits

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure.
  • Stop smoking (or don’t start).
  • Be aware of any changes in your body that may be causing greying, including certain medications or medical conditions.
  • Avoid stress as much as possible—it can have a negative effect on your health, including hair growth and maintenance.
  • Eat a healthy diet, including foods rich in Vitamin B12 (like fish or meat) which helps keep your scalp hydrated and healthy.

5. Try laser therapy

Laser therapy is one of the most effective ways to get rid of grey hairs. It works for both men and women and can permanently remove the grays in just a few sessions.

The procedure is completely painless, but it does cost quite a bit of money. It also takes time for the laser to penetrate deep enough into your skin to destroy your grey hair follicles. In some cases, it can take up to three months for you to start seeing results. The good news: once those grey hairs are gone, they’re gone for good!

6. Get a stem-cell transplant

  • Get a stem-cell transplant.
  • Stem cells are found inside the body. They can be used to treat Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and other diseases of aging. Stem cells come from umbilical cord blood or bone marrow, or from umbilical cord tissue after birth.
  • It’s also possible to create new stem cells outside the body using skin or blood samples (this is called induced pluripotent stem cell technology).

You don’t have to accept grey hairs

You don’t have to accept grey hairs, especially if you take action now. You can choose to go grey, or not. If you want to prevent the appearance of grey hair, there are some things you can do about it.

You can dye your hair, either at home with a box kit or in a salon with professional products (and lots of money). Or maybe you’ll try topical treatments like Rogaine and Propecia which claim to slow down the process of going grey and keep it from happening altogether. However these may not be worth the side effects; dermatologists say they haven’t been proven safe or effective in slowing down graying so far.

You can also change your lifestyle by adopting healthy habits—exercise regularly and eat right! This will help reduce stress on your body which is known as one cause for graying hair according to Dr. David Biesman, MD., Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at NYU Langone Medical Center

Or just wait for science: there may soon be another option for getting rid of those unwanted greys that doesn’t involve any medications at all but instead uses lasers from an anti-aging clinic such as Ulthera NYC! These procedures use lasers on areas where there are signs of aging such as wrinkles around the eyes near eyebrows etc.; they then emit heat energy into those specific areas causing them to contract temporarily tighter which reduces visibility (or even disappearance altogether) due their reduced size due contraction.”
